Anthropic launched Claude Cowork for macOS in early March 2026, turning Claude from a chat-based assistant into a desktop agent. Claude Cowork can read files on your Mac, open applications, switch between windows, and execute multi-step workflows. You describe what you want done, and Claude handles the navigation, clicking, and typing across your apps.
This positions Anthropic directly against Microsoft’s Copilot Cowork, but with a macOS-first approach. For professionals who work primarily on Apple hardware, Claude Cowork fills a gap that Microsoft’s Windows-focused agent does not address.
What Claude Cowork Does on Your Mac
- Reads and analyzes files from your local file system, including PDFs, spreadsheets, and documents
- Shares context across Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint to automate cross-application workflows
- Navigates between apps using macOS accessibility features
- Performs research tasks by reading web pages, extracting data, and compiling summaries
- Maintains conversation context so follow-up requests build on previous work
How Claude Cowork Handles Cross-App Context
The most useful capability is shared context across applications. When Claude Cowork reads a spreadsheet in Excel, it retains that data when you ask it to create a presentation in PowerPoint. You do not need to copy-paste data or re-explain what you are working on. The agent maintains a working memory of everything it has seen during your session.
Claude Cowork maintains shared context across Excel, PowerPoint, and other macOS apps, so you describe your goal once and the agent handles the rest.
Anthropic built this on top of the Claude Opus 4.6 model, which supports a 1-million-token context window in beta. That context budget is large enough to hold the contents of dozens of documents simultaneously, giving the agent deep understanding of your current project.
Privacy and Security on macOS
Claude Cowork uses macOS accessibility permissions, the same system that screen readers and automation tools use. You grant permission through System Settings, and you can revoke it at any time. Anthropic states that file contents processed locally are not sent to their servers for training. API calls to Claude’s language model transmit only the text needed for the current task.
For teams handling sensitive data, Anthropic offers an Enterprise tier with additional controls including audit logging, data residency options, and the ability to restrict which folders and applications Claude Cowork can access.
Where Claude Cowork Fits in Your Workflow
Claude Cowork works best for knowledge workers who spend their days moving information between documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. Consultants preparing client deliverables, analysts building reports from multiple data sources, and project managers compiling status updates across tools are the primary audience.
The agent is available now for Claude Pro and Enterprise subscribers on macOS. Anthropic has not announced a Windows version, though the company has indicated cross-platform support is under consideration.
