At the same time, Meta will reduce its reliance on third-party vendors who currently handle much of this work. Why Meta Is Making This Move Now

The shift comes after Meta spent the past year loosening its content moderation approach. The company ended its third-party fact-checking program in favor of a Community Notes model similar to X. It lifted restrictions on topics described as “mainstream discourse.” It also faces multiple lawsuits seeking to hold social media companies accountable for harming children and young users.

“While we will still have people who review content, these systems will be able to take on work that is better-suited to technology, like repetitive reviews of graphic content or areas where adversarial actors are constantly changing their tactics,” Meta explained.

Where Humans Still Fit In

Meta is not removing humans entirely. Experts will design, train, oversee, and evaluate the AI systems. People will continue making the highest-risk decisions, such as appeals of account disablement or reports to law enforcement. The company frames this as redirecting human expertise toward complex judgment calls while letting AI handle high-volume, repetitive review.

The practical challenge is calibration. AI systems that are too aggressive will over-enforce, removing legitimate content and frustrating users. Systems that are too lenient will miss harmful content. Meta says early results show improvement on both fronts, but scaling from tests to the billions of posts shared daily on its platforms will be the real test.

The Bigger Picture for AI Content Moderation

Meta also launched a Meta AI support assistant that provides 24/7 customer support on Facebook and Instagram. Combined with the content enforcement changes, Meta is embedding AI deeper into the operational layer of its platforms.

For the content moderation industry, this shift has significant implications. Third-party moderation firms that rely on contracts with Meta will lose business. Workers who review graphic content for a living will see their roles reduced. The quality of AI-driven moderation at scale will determine whether this is a genuine improvement or a cost-cutting measure that comes at the expense of user safety.
