Apple Intelligence 2.0: What the Spring Update Actually Changes

Apple released Apple Intelligence 2.0 with the iOS 19.4 update in April 2026. The update adds three capabilities that were conspicuously missing from the original Apple Intelligence launch: on-device image understanding, persistent Siri context memory, and cross-app action execution. We tested every new feature on an iPhone 16 Pro to evaluate what works, what does not, and how it compares to competing assistants.

What Is New in Apple Intelligence 2.0

  • On-device image understanding. Siri can now describe, analyze, and answer questions about images on your device. Point the camera at a restaurant menu and ask “what is the cheapest vegetarian option?” Take a photo of a document and ask Siri to extract specific information.
  • Persistent context memory. Siri now remembers context across conversations. Tell Siri “I prefer window seats on flights” and that preference persists across future interactions. Previous Siri sessions were completely independent.
  • Cross-app actions. Siri can perform multi-step tasks that span multiple apps. “Book a restaurant near my meeting tonight and send the details to the attendees” triggers lookups in Calendar, searches in Maps/Yelp, makes a reservation, and sends messages.
  • Writing tools upgrade. The rewriting, summarization, and proofreading features now support tables, lists, and formatted documents, not just plain text.

What Works Well

Image understanding is genuinely useful. The on-device processing means it works without internet and keeps your photos private. We tested it on 20 common scenarios: reading business cards, identifying plants, describing scenes for accessibility, and extracting text from screenshots. It handled 17 out of 20 correctly. The three failures involved complex handwriting and heavily stylized text.

Context memory changes the Siri experience. In our testing, Siri correctly recalled preferences and context from earlier conversations about 80% of the time. Telling Siri preferences once (dietary restrictions, preferred airlines, communication preferences) and having them apply automatically is a significant quality-of-life improvement.

Privacy architecture remains strong. Image analysis runs entirely on-device. Context memory is stored in the device’s secure enclave. Cross-app actions use Apple’s Private Cloud Compute for complex requests, with on-device processing for simpler tasks.

What Still Needs Work

Cross-app actions are slow and inconsistent. The multi-step workflows work impressively when they work, but they fail silently about 25% of the time. In our testing, the restaurant booking + messaging scenario succeeded 3 out of 4 attempts. When it failed, Siri completed some steps but not others without explaining what went wrong.

Third-party app support is limited. Cross-app actions work well with Apple’s own apps but support for third-party apps depends on developers adopting the App Intents framework. As of April 2026, only about 15% of popular apps have implemented Intents for AI actions.

Conversational intelligence still trails GPT-5.4. For complex questions requiring reasoning, analysis, or creative generation, Siri’s underlying model produces shorter, less detailed responses than ChatGPT. Apple Intelligence is designed for task execution, not open-ended conversation.

Apple Intelligence 2.0 vs Google Assistant vs Alexa

Task execution: Google Assistant leads on cross-app integration because of Android’s deeper intent system. Apple Intelligence 2.0 closes the gap significantly. Alexa remains focused on smart home and commerce.

Conversational quality: Google Assistant (powered by Gemini) leads. Apple Intelligence is competent but less detailed. Alexa trails both.

Privacy: Apple Intelligence leads. On-device processing and Private Cloud Compute provide stronger privacy guarantees than Google or Amazon’s cloud-first approaches.

Ecosystem integration: Each wins within its own ecosystem. Apple Intelligence works best if you use Apple devices, iCloud, and Apple apps.

Should You Update?

If you have an iPhone 16 series or newer, update immediately. The image understanding and context memory features are useful enough to change daily workflows. The cross-app actions are promising but still need refinement — treat them as a preview of what is coming rather than a reliable feature today.

Apple Intelligence 2.0 does not make the iPhone the best AI device. But it makes Siri genuinely useful for the first time in years, and that is worth the update.
